Chief Screech Shadewing was formerly a famous adventurer known as “The Great Owl” in his younger days. He was a Ranger of tremendous strength and dexterity and a conqueror of many great beasts. Screech eventually found love in a fellow adventurer named Athena and they were granted a son together. They raised little Squawk together, eventually settling down in Alever to give their son a stable and safe life. Screech continued adventuring to provide for his new family while Athena retired from that life to be at home with the little one. Eventually, Squawk grew up and found a wife of his own in the beautiful Octavia and they had a son of their own. Life was good for the Shadewings in Alever. Sadly, not everything sweet can be everlasting. One day, a great monster came to the region and threatened to destroy the village of Alever. Screech and Athena set off together to vanquish the beast and were successful in that very venture. But Athena was mortally wounded in the battle and Screech had to say goodbye to the love of his life forever on that day. Two years passed by and then a cold, harsh winter struck Alever, the likes of which they had never seen before. Both Squawk and his beloved Octavia fell ill and unfortunately neither of them survived the winter. Their son, Shriek, had no one left aside from his grandfather. Screech and Shriek were an unlikely pair but all either of them had left was each other at this point. So Screech finally retired from adventuring himself in order to raise the young owlin there in Alever. Eventually, Screech’s fame, strength, and wisdom caught up to him and the rest of the village voted him into the position of Chief. He urged the people that all he had time for was taking care of Shriek, but to be honest, at this point Shriek had already become quite independent and Screech felt his heart warmed by the village’s need for him, so he hesitantly accepted the position. So Screech continued raising the boy while also caring for the village which they called home. And now, Shriek has grown into a young man and somewhat of a prodigy. The boy idolized his grandfather and grew up wanting to be just like him. He heard the stories of Screech’s hay day as a famous adventurer and wanted nothing more than to follow in his footsteps. And Screech was thoroughly amazed at just how talented the young Shriek was. He caught on to everything Screech taught him so quickly and so easily. Sword-fighting, unarmed combat, stealth training, and so much more. But archery, my goodness, the boy was a natural at archery. Screech thought to himself, “This child may yet be a better archer than I ever dreamt of being.” And that wasn’t far from the truth. By the time Shriek had become a young man, he had already surpassed his grandfather in archery skills. Yet even now, Shriek remains humble and swears his grandfather is still the best.
